School of Seven Bells guitarist Benjamin Curtis has lost his year-long battle with cancer.

A statement from the indie rock band says the 35-year-old died Sunday night in New York City.

Curtis announced back in February that he had been diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma, but was undergoing aggressive chemotherapy treatment in an effort to fight the disease.

Some of his fellow musicians - including Interpol's Paul Banks, the Strokes' Albert Hammond Jr., and Devendra Banhart - took part in various benefit concerts to raise funds for the treatment.

The band says they can't thank everyone enough for all the support, adding that it gave Curtis the opportunity to see "how truly loved he was and how many lives he had touched through his music."

Curtis formed School of Seven Bells with Alejandra Deheza and her sister Claudia in 2007.  They put out three studio albums together, including what turned out to be their final release, 2012's Ghostory.
