A wrong-way driver made for some anxious moments as he passed through Rochester on I-490 this morning.
Rochester police say a patrol car noticed an SUV going west in the eastbound lanes near Clinton Avenue. He followed the vehicle through the city until it ran off the interstate west of downtown. It landed in a ravine at the 490-390 split in Gates at about 5:20 a.m. State, County and Gates police blocked on ramps to keep traffic off the highway until the situation was resolved.
Police say the driver was an older Fairport man. He was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital to be checked out, although he was conscious and didn't appear to be injured. They say intoxication looks like a major cause of this incident. The investigation is continuing.
