Rochester, NY -- Rochester's latest crime numbers continue an overall downward trend that began several years ago.
Crimes in nearly all major categories were down for the first six months of the year. The exception was a 14 percent uptick in robberies.
Police Chief James Sheppard says it appears the robberies are the result of people stealing cell phones, especially from young victims, then trading them for cash.
Mayor Tom Richards says the overall numbers are encouraging because they show they city is making real progress,
Sheppard says the overall numbers are the lowest in 12 years and on track to set a 28-year low.
