Rochester Businessman Sentenced in Tax Evasion Case

Rochester, NY -- The sentence is a year of home confinement plus probation for an area businessman who pleaded guilty to filing false tax returns.

Federal prosecutors say John Gizzi cheated the government out of $1.9 million in federal income taxes. His business -- Rochester Machinery Suppliers -- was fined one half-million dollars. And Gizzi was fined $15,000.

The court noted Gizzi and his business had paid $11.5 million in back taxes, penalties, interest, fines and forfeitures. And given Gizzi’s complicated health condition, the court decided prison time could potentially be fatal.
