Renaissance Festival has the cash, will operate

STERLING, N.Y. (AP) - Organizers of the Sterling Renaissance Festival say they've raised enough funds to operate this summer.

Festival organizers say the theme park on Lake Ontario will open Saturday morning and operate on weekends through Aug. 17.

Festival owner Doug Waterbury told The Post-Standard of Syracuse (http://bit.ly/Tw85No http://bit.ly/Tw85No ) a week ago he needed $300,000 to open because a private alternative lender couldn't give him a loan this year. He said he needed the cash for operating expenses.

The festival conducted a public campaign asking for donations and raised $14,980, according to the Web site Rockethub. The festival's Facebook page reports a $30,000 loan has been secured from a festival follower.

Waterbury says this financial crunch is a one-time problem for the festival, which opened in 1977.

Sterling is 40 miles northwest of Syracuse.
