A report from the National Conference of State Legislators puts New York in the bottom half of the 50 states in terms of women serving in state office.
Slightly more than 21 percent of state lawmakers in New York are women, which is less than the national average of 24 percent.
In two states, Colorado and Vermont, more than 40 percent of the state senators and assembly members are women. A lot of the Midwest is about average. Most of the western states and the State of Florida turn out to have a greater percentage of women in state office than New York.
