Honors for officer who responded to Webster firefighter ambush

Webster, NY -- The Webster police officer who exchanged gunfire with a man who killed two volunteer firefighters last December is being honored for his actions.

Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy will present Officer Mark Reed with the 2012 New York State Police Officer of the Year Award Thursday.

Authorities say Reed shot at William Spengler after Spengler ambushed Webster volunteer firefighters who arrived at the scene of a house fire Spengler had started on Christmas Eve morning. Spengler committed suicide during the gunfight.
