Holley, NY -- The Holley Fire Department is hosting its annual Squirrel Slam fundraiser Saturday, and animal rights activists will be back for a protest.
The state director of Friends of Animals, Edita Birnkrant, wants state lawmakers to ban contests that involve animal killings. She believes the contests are psychologically damaging to children. She says kids as young as 12 shouldn't be rewarded for killing. She's hoping about 100 protesters will join her.
But fire department president Frank Gaylord says it's the final weekend of squirrel hunting season, and families will be shooting squirrels anyway. He says most of hunters will keep and eat their squirrels.
And he says the fire department expects to clear $4,000 for new equipment. He says the 650 tickets sold out in three weeks.
