Democrats introduce ethics legislation package

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) _ Democrats in the state Senate have introduced legislation to curb the government corruption that has tarnished New York politics.

The minority conference announced the package of nine bills Tuesday. They include measures to strengthen regulations on the use of campaign money, ban the use of campaign money for criminal defense, require more disclosure of campaign donations as well as a bill that would also establish a public financing system for state campaigns.

One of the bills would strip pension benefits from corrupt state officials. Currently, only lawmakers elected after 2011 can have their pensions voided if convicted of a felony related to public office.

The announcement comes amid backlash over Gov. Andrew Cuomo's decision last month to close a commission he created to investigate corruption.
